This summer, embrace stillness within movement. Relish every moment. You may find yourself exploring unfamiliar landscapes or returning to places you know well, only now as a parent, perhaps for the very first time. Pause. There is meaning here beyond what seems apparent. Notice how your baby meets the world. New parts of their personhood begin to take shape as they navigate the unfamiliar. Perhaps the same is true for you. An inner dance of letting go of the old to meet the new, or of reconciling the two.
In every space, no matter where or how, every little detail and hue bursts with sensation. Your baby watches, touches, feels, experiencing everything through their senses, fully. Perhaps you do, too. There is nourishment in slowing down just enough to feel the warmth of sunset spilling across your skin. To notice how a cool drink refreshes you in the heat, or how the breeze feels as it brushes past. To fully breathe in the untouched nature you find yourself in. Maybe it’s pine, wildflowers, or a scent you can’t quite name, but sensing it stills you.
The fresh air and the roots of trees replenish and remind you of belonging. After all, you are now a root to someone else as well. A tree aware, perhaps for the very first time, of its place in a forest of connection, across generations, space, and time. How does it feel to hold your baby with that knowing? Engage the senses. Allow stillness. Mindfulness won’t slow time, but will expand it. It will allow you to savor the process, notice what might have gone unseen, and remind you of who you are and who you are becoming. Moment by moment, with presence, leading to a life full of meaningful memories.
Relish it. All of it.
