Guide to Carrier Blends & Care
Artipoppe woven wraps, ring slings and Zeitgeist baby carriers are available in a wide variety of fibres and blends. Especially for woven wraps and ring slings, choosing the right blend is very much dependent on personal opinion and you can immediately feel the differences when you touch the products.
Artipoppe fabric is designed in the Netherlands and woven in Lithuania with the highest quality, and most durable yarn available in the world. For the materials we make use of specific regional expertise, such as cashmere from Mongolia, wool from Scotland, merino* from New-Zealand, Qiviut from North-America and cotton from Egypt.
*we are paying close attention to our merino suppliers and request “mulesing-free” certificates for all merino yarns we source.
There is a high level of personal attention given to each detail of our fabrics from the yarns and dyes used, the art of blending fibres, the designs chosen for each blend, and subsequently each product. Here is some information about the common fibres we use.
The most widely used natural fibre cloth in the world. Cotton is soft, easy to care for and extremely unlikely to irritate the skin. Cotton is particularly breathable and cool. Thinner cotton wraps are not usually the most supportive of wraps but thicker ones can be very supportive. Cotton is not as cool as linen, or as warm as hemp. It is not as insulating as wool, or as strong as silk. However, the best feature of cotton is that it is usually soft straight out of the box and very easy to break in. Furthermore it is easycare.
Cashmere is the fine dehaired undercoat from the cashmere goat. It is known for its extreme softness, warmth and lustrous quality, a result of its extremely fine fibres. Cashmere has a silky feel and it’s truly an uncomparable experience.
Babycamel is the soft downy inner coat of the Bactrian babycamel. It is considered a luxury fibre and is very warm and light. Babycamel is a great alternative to cashmere and can be blended with various yarns.
The vicuña is one of two wild South American camelids which live in the high alpine areas of the Andes. The vicuña gives the most luxurious wool in the world. It is the finest fibre and even softer than cashmere. The vicuña only produces about 0.5 kg of wool a year, and gathering it requires a certain process. The Vicuña animal is a protected animal, therefore Artipoppe only uses yarns certificated by CITES.
Qiviut is an Inuktitut word commonly used to indicate the wool of the muskox. Qiviut is one of our signature luxury wools and is stronger than lambswool and softer than cashmere. Qiviut does not shrink in water at any temperature. We use a very woolly Qiviut to make the warmest cosiest wraps for winter and a more smooth spun Qiviut that is also very suitable for summer.
Silk wraps feel very luxurious. Silk is one of the strongest natural fibres, and is very supportive. Wraps with silk in them are suitable for both warm and cool weather wrapping. Silk wicks moisture which means it can keep you comfortable in warm weather. Silk also keeps warm air circulating close to the skin in cool weather due to its low conductivity. Silk has low elasticity, so it lacks ‘bounce’ when compared to other blends available.
Merino is breathable in summer, insulating in winter, yet exceptionally soft and lightweight. A special technique that removes the scales from the merino wool so that it can’t felt is used for our superwash merino’s. Therefore superwash merino is easycare.
Many linen blend woven wraps or ring slings can be tough to break in, but they are worth it. Linen blend wraps are often recommended for those looking for a supportive wrap. Linen is smooth and cool to the touch and is your best choice for hot weather. Linen is known for its nubs and slubs, natural thickenings and irregularities in the thread.
Hemp has been used in Asia and the Middle East for thousands of years. Hemp is also resistant to mold and typically lasts four times longer than cotton. Which is great if you’re thinking about a legacy woven wrap to pass down generations. Wraps or ring slings made from hemp are beautiful, slightly smooth and silky with a high natural sheen. They are quite cushy/bouncy. Hemp wraps or ring slings can take a little breaking in from new.
Our Seaweed yarn is made of Seacell, which is a cellulose fiber that serves as a host for the seaweed, and therefore also contains the seaweed’s revitalizing properties for the skin. We spin the seaweed together with silk, this combination is the ultimate luxury for a cool touch, shiny and smooth but cushy wrap or ring sling that is especially very comfortable in summer.
All Artipoppe carriers arrive washed and ironed and are ready to use. Always follow washing instructions on the tag. In general, we offer machine washable and hand wash only products.
Woven Wraps and Ring Slings
Wash at a 30°C (86°F) on a delicate program. Line dry in the shade. Only use liquid detergent and do not use softeners. Do not tumble dry, though a careful tumbling AFTER drying may fluff and soften your wrap or ring sling to the max. Hot steam iron.
Hand Wash Only
Swirl in lukewarm water with a gentle liquid detergent (“no-rinse” detergents are not advised, and do not use detergents that hold lanolin, both can cause colors to bleed). Rinse gently in clean water, same temperature as the previous bath, and do not use running water. Squeeze and press water out without wringing. Fold your wrap between towels and roll up. Press the roll to remove excess water. Dry flat in the shade. Iron on wool or silk setting.
Zeitgeist Baby Carriers
