Babywearing Safety

While babywearing offers a number of benefits, it is important to ensure that you are carrying your child safely. Please keep the following things in mind when wrapping and wearing your child:

Baby Wrap and Ring Sling

WARNINGS

  • Constantly monitor your child and ensure the mouth and nose are unobstructed.
  • For pre-term, low birthweight babies and children with medical conditions, seek advice
from a health professional before using this product.
  • Ensure your child’s chin is not resting on its chest as its breathing may be restricted
which could lead to suffocation.
  • To prevent hazards from falling ensure that your child is securely positioned in the sling.
  • Only use this carrier with children weighing between 3.2 kg/7 lbs. and 20 kg/44 lbs.

SUFFOCATION HAZARD
Babies younger than 4 months can suffocate in this product if face is pressed tightly against your body. Babies at greatest risk of suffocation include those born prematurely and those with respiratory problems.

  • Check often to make sure baby’s face is uncovered, clearly visible, and away
from caregiver’s body at all times.
  • Make sure baby does not curl into a position with the chin resting on or near baby’s
This position can interfere with breathing, even when nothing is covering the
nose or mouth.
  • If you nurse your baby in carrier, always reposition after feeding so baby’s face is not
pressed against your body.
  • Never use this carrier with babies smaller than 8 pounds without seeking the advice of
a healthcare professional.

FALL HAZARD
Leaning, bending over, or tripping can cause baby to fall. Keep one hand on baby while moving.

  1. Always use common sense when wrapping.
  2. Read and follow all printed instructions and view instructional videos on the Artipoppe website. Ensure that the baby is safely positioned in the sling carrier according to these instructions.
  3. Never leave a baby in a wrap that is not being worn.
  4. Check on the baby often. Ensure that the baby is periodically repositioned.
  5. Never use the sling when balance or mobility is impaired.
  6. The sling carrier is not suitable for use during sports activities e.g. running, cycling, swimming and skiing.
  7. The carer should be aware of the increased risk of your child falling out of the sling as it becomes more active.
  8. Never place more than one baby in a wrap or wear more than one wrap at a time.
  9. Never wrap while engaging in activities which involve a heat source or exposure to chemicals, such as cooking and cleaning.
  10. Always make sure your child is able to breathe freely.
  11. Always wrap your child facing your body.
  12. Always wrap tightly and make sure your child is adequately supported by the wrap, make a good seat and tuck enough fabric under its bum.
  13. Always wrap your child in “frog” position, make sure the knees are at the same height or higher than the hips.
  14. Always make sure you can kiss your child at the top of his or her head if front carrying.
  15. Always tie with a reef-knot.
  16. Before each use, check you your wrap for any damage, ripped seams, torn straps or fabric, and damaged hardware. If found, stop using it and ask Artipoppe for advice.
  17. Always check to ensure that all knots and adjustments are secure.
  18. Always make sure your child’s head is supported.
  19. Always be aware of your child’s body heat. The wrap provides extra layers of fabric and you share each other’s body heat, so adjust clothing to these facts.
  20. Do not drive a vehicle, ride a bike or be a passenger in a motor vehicle when using a wrap.
  21. Be aware of hazards in the domestic environment, e.g. heat sources and spilling of hot drinks.
  22. Keep the wrap away from children when it is not in use.
  23. Only use back carries after adequate practice, over a soft surface or with someone to help.
  24. Always start practicing one carry (preferably Front Wrap Cross Carry). If you master this carry you can go on and practice more. A little help from a baby wearing consultant is a good idea.
