My First Promise to You, My Child

To you, my love,

I know you were with me from the moment I was born. You’ve been a part of me in every step of my life, the same way I will be a part of yours. I’ve had moments where I thought, ‘My life has started now, truly,’ from graduating high school to university to getting married or securing my first ‘big girl’ job. Little did I know that my life only started when I heard your steady heartbeat for the first time. It was as if my favorite song started playing. I was addicted to the sound and in love with you and myself even, for creating you.

There were many moments in my life when I didn’t know my purpose. I thought I’d never really understand what it means to be alive or why. But once I saw you–a tiny little spec on a black-and-white screen–I knew. It all became clear. We were meant to be together and every day I find myself getting more and more excited to one day meet you. I think about you all the time. Every second of every minute of every day. And I talk to you even though you maybe can’t even hear me yet. I feel that you understand me and my emotions. And I feel that you already know who you want to be in life and where you want to go. I think about you growing up into a beautiful soul that everyone loves wherever you go.

The world can be a scary place sometimes, I know…but I promise to keep you safe. I promise to love you in every waking moment of our lives together and be your best friend, advisor, and light in the darkest of times. I promise you patience and fun and that I will always do my best to give you the best life possible.

That is my first promise to you, my child.
